Curriculum and Lesson Plans

Fifty Nifty Econ Cards
Fifty Nifty Econ Cards are designed for elementary and middle school students to assist them in developing a knowledge base of economic and personal finance words. Using the accompanying Teacher Resource Guide to introduce the word cards and meanings to students should help provide a foundation in economic thinking. The resource guide activities and games will help teachers integrate economic vocabulary into the school day through language, math, social studies and art. View the chart of economics and personal finance concepts or the glossary of econ concept cards to find grade-appropriate words for your students.
Traveling Trunk
The Traveling Trunk has been created for elementary and middle school students to develop an awareness of the Federal Reserve Bank and to share resources available to teachers on money and banking. The trunk includes hands-on artifacts with related talking points, as well as lesson plans and activities to teach money concepts. The trunk resources offer instruction in economics and personal finance, and include extension activities in math, reading and social studies areas.

The Money Circle Curriculum Series
Now available online, The Money Circle is a free, classroom-ready curriculum that features money, economics, and personal finance concepts for secondary students. The curriculum addresses key objectives including:
  • Understanding the history, functions, and characteristics of money

  • Evaluating personal financial decisions relative to education/training

  • Establishing and using credit wisely

  • Analyzing saving and investing options and budgeting concepts

  • Understanding the role of the Federal Reserve in affecting the money supply

Money Museum Lessons
Grades 5-8: These lessons focus on banks and why they are important to the U.S. economy. (Visual and Activities, Visual 2 Decision Grid)

Grades 9-12: These lessons focus on the Federal Reserve Bank, and how it helps to control the growth of the U.S. money supply. (Visual and Activities)
There's no Business like Bank Business
This role play introduces students to the benefits of saving money in a bank. Included is an optional lesson to introduce the role play, name tags for characters to wear and a list of related children's literature. Recommended for grades 3-5.
Payment Parliament
This role play introduces students to the different methods of payment that consumers can use to purchase goods and services. Included is an optional lesson to introduce the role play and name tags for the payment characters. Recommended for grades 5-8.
Do I Have What It Takes to be an Entrepreneur -- and is my Community Ready?
"Do I Have What It Takes to be an Entrepreneur--and is my Community Ready?" is a classroom-ready lesson that provides an introductory way for students to discuss individual entrepreneurial concepts, as well as the way that entrepreneurship can impact their communities. A teacher's guide and student activities are available to view and print.
Teaching Tips
Teaching Tips provide ways for educators to integrate current issues and Federal Reserve research into the classroom through extension activities and discussion questions.
Brain Drain
In this lesson, the concept of "brain drain," or loss of skilled labor from one area to another due to this labor's movement to a more favorable economic environment, is explored with students. Recommended for grades 9-12.
To Pay the Price
As more banking and shopping transactions are being done on the internet, students need to become familiar with online banking and electronic methods of payment. This role play introduces students to these online transactions in the format of a quiz show titled "To Pay the Price". As students act out the roles of contestants, hosts and commercial characters, they will become more aware of the importance of electronic banking in their lives. Recommended for grades 5-8.
Professor Finance and the Fed Boy Meet the Catastrophe Clan
Understanding credit and loan operations will help prepare students for their future financial needs as adults. An awareness of the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure(CARD) Act should aid students in developing an overview of consumers' rights to credit. This role play introduces students to the use and misuse of credit in a humorous format and emphasizes the importance of wise financial decision-making. Recommended for grades 7-10.
